Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) is Not Just for "A" Items

Why Would I Let a Supplier Manage My Inventory? - An Introduction to Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) for Distributors

President's Update

Welcome to the Datalliance Newsletter. Though the economy was an ongoing challenge through the middle half of this year, we continued to see strong interest in VMI and it remained one of the technologies to receive positive press and attention from industry analysts. Here are just a few examples of VMI in the press:

  • Retail SDC (Supply & Demand Chain) recently wrote an article titled “VMI on the Rise in U.S. Retail”.
  • Four leading electrical distributors (all using Datalliance VMI) are featured in the November issue of The Electrical Distributor (TED Magazine) recognizing the benefits that they receive from VMI.
  • Ward Manufacturing’s expanding VMI program was covered in the August issue of The Wholesaler.
  • A Gartner Group survey performed earlier this year of 83 Retail executives with IT decision making responsibility, predicted a significant pull back on all new project launches in the supply chains areas, except for VMI.
  • Hubbell's innovation in early adoption of VMI and their progression to Datalliance VMI was covered in the October issue of Electrical Wholesaling.
  • An AMR Research report in October recognized the successful VMI pilot program between Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems and Sisters of Mercy.
  • Datalliance VMI was included in an AMR Research report in October titled “The Resurgence of Vendor Managed Inventory: A Landscape”.

We’ve added new customers and our existing customers continue to expand their VMI programs. Valor Brands, Tectran, Southwire, Gates Corporation, MacLean Power Systems, and NSK are all featured in press releases listed below. To stay ahead of our growth curve, we have added several new people to our organization: Doug Bethea, Steve Kemen and Scott Kleinert. They bring extensive experience in sales, IT, VMI, and category management from their previous roles with Procter & Gamble, IBM, and National Marketshare Group.

Mark your calendars for the 2010 Datalliance Customer Forum! Next years Forum will be held May 18th and 19th , in Cincinnati. Put this event on your calendar and we’ll get additional information to you in the coming months.

Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone that responded to our recent Customer Survey. Our average score again improved which indicates that we are continuing to enhance our efforts related to Customer Care, Training, Project Management and Case Tracking. Is VMI Right for You? – Four electrical distributors find that Vendor Managed Inventory is the answer to their replenishment needs
The Electrical Distributor (TED) Magazine, November 2009

In this recent article, four leading electrical industry distributors (all four use Datalliance VMI) were interviewed regarding their experience and success with VMI. The distributors included in the article are: Revere Electric Supply, North Coast Electric, Werner Electric Supply, and Kirby Risk.

The distributors all reported a substantial increase in the percentage of their inventory now managed by VMI.

“We began using VMI in 2005, primarily at the request of Rockwell Automation,” recalled Mike Ales, Werner Electric’s vice president of purchasing and operations. Four years later, Werner’s VMI transactions represent about 50% of the company’s volume.

Rockwell Automation also requested Kirby Risk’s participation in VMI, and the company began using it in 2002. According to Joe Hart, director of purchasing and material management, “Today, about 80% of our inventory is being managed through VMI.”

The bottom line results realized by all four distributors drove home the business benefits that they gain through VMI.

Revere Electric Supply: “… VMI enables us to achieve better fill rates and higher turns because the real-time data enable manufacturers to respond quickly and accurately to our product needs.”

North Coast Electric: “The improved efficiencies offered by VMI’s data synchronization allow our inventory managers to focus on long-term visions and strategies rather than on day-to-day generation of purchase orders.”

Werner Electric: “… turns are also higher and customer service improved. With VMI, we have been able to increase both our in-stock percentages and fill rates.”

Kirby Risk: “By the time a new product is launched, the distributor already has it on its shelves and available immediately to customers.”
